Hmmm. Changed it not long ago. Everything looks OK. I called the professional Julia at Golden Eagle. We discussed and I tweaked. Still slipped. I called again and talked to Dennis. His conclusion was the same as Julia's but with more technical jargon to share.

Julia felt the gear was worn but I had trouble understanding how to observe it.

Sure enough, after ordering a new gear, one size larger, it was obvious that mine was worn when the new one arrived. Pictures soon for details...

Gear : $29
Belt : $29

Therefore, the conclusion of this matter is that with a number 13 gear versus a number 12 the bicycle is zooming along once again.

All the belts I have are still good so I should be covered until at least the year 2155.

I can tell a noticeable difference. Everything is tighter and I pulled one of the largest hills in the area, peddling included, and did not have any problem eventhough I was using the previous belt which had slipped alot on worn gear #12.

I love this invention.
GEBE no freebee but so worth the mirth.

more soon...

3333 Miles on The Golden Eagle Bike Engine

3333 Miles on The Golden Eagle Bike Engine

HELLO SAN DIEGO ! 3000 miles!

I hit the 3000 mile mark!
Virtual Pretend Bike Journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific:
Going the northern I-40 route (2,963 miles) I just splashed into the Pacific Ocean!

Going the southern route through Houston to El Paso, Tucson and then on to San Diego, I have 38 miles to go.

ONE more! I took a bungee cord and looped and pulled the lever towards the seat. This worked. A beautiful day and a perfect ride.

A few weeks ago I ordered a 2 new belts. My first belt had one spot on it where the grooves were slightly worn causing a knock/slap sound while riding full throttle. I put the new belt on and carry the second just in case.

The worn grooves in only one spot was curious. It possibly came this way: When riding down a steep hill, the engine throttle is not used. Once the ground levels, if you immediately hit the throttle without pedaling, there is a peculiar slap sound as the belt engages. Even a few pedals may not stop the loud slap of the belt. If you pedal until all bicycle motion is controlled by your pedaling, and then slowly start the throttle pressure, the slapping usually will not occur.

I may have damaged the first belt as I learned proper procedures.

Other than that, I have changed the oil and everything works great. I noticed this last trip I may have increased one (1) mile per hour. They said the Subaru Robin engine would get better and better with age and use.

Great Spring. Have just had a few small rides but preparing the bike for the bigger ones. I sure like the 200 miles a gallon of the Robin Engine. The Golden Eagle Bike Engine kit has held up very well over a cold winter. I had to keep the bicycle outside due to the engine smell indoors. However, it always started quickly regardless of the temperatures. Nothing broke with the kit parts - throttle, kill switch, spokes ring, cables or main gear belt. I am very pleased with this system. It has passed all tests wonderfully.

The only crack I had was in the plastic gear/belt shield. This shield can vibrate while riding due to engine, wind, or bumps. One bump cracked it at the connecting bolt section. Nothing major.

What I decided to do is use the soft side of the velcro strips I had. I placed them on the inside and edges of the shield. This silenced nearly all noise and bad vibration hinderances from the shield while riding. I'll add a photograph.

The time change comes March 9 so we'll have more light in the evening.

More soon.

1600 Miles !

A few miles here, a few miles there,
Here a chill, there a hill,
Everywhere a thrill thrill.
Ole McGoldenEagle is a charm
Here I here I go.

Very Nice Gift for Riding Safety

Hello all. Just got a very nice gift. It is an LED Safety Vest. Very lightweight with 16 LEDs and reflective yellow strips.

I have been having trouble with some of my flashing LED lights on the back of the bicycle. It seems the vibration of the motor makes them turn off. Also I have had a concern about their dimness.

It is Winter which wonderfully means we will be getting more light and shorter dark nights. Until then, this will definately make myself feel more safe and my family feel more at ease. I may even wear it during daytime riding also.

See it here ... Temperature is 21 degrees F. And ... 1500 MILES!

Great 40 miles of riding today. Engine cut off once in the cold when I was coasting down a hill. I had to stop to restart. Other than that all worked perfectly.

I'll post some updates I did on the plastic Golden Eagle motor shield. The cold weather got it to banging.

I conquered 1500 Miles! 1519 actually. That puts our Virtual Pretend Bike Journey at Sulphur Springs Texas, 60 miles from Dallas.

So bundle up on the cold rides. It is great to be able to get around. Ride

Rode to Church. Sun was setting and temperatures were dropping but all went well. Just around 5 mile journey. We had a great service. Had a great after service time with everyone for about an hour. Was about the last to leave after being offered a free truck ride homeward.

I had all my various lights on. Some run by cellphone battery and the big one was from the Black and Decker big beam I had modified.

I came back on the backroads which added about a mile. A very enjoyable ride. It was after 10:00 PM so the traffic was very thin. Some places were coooooold and other areas had an almost warm breeze.

Upon arrival I checked the temperature and it was 34 Degrees.

Safe Sound and Warm. (Ok, this is a bit over verbed) I added the gasoline that was purchased two months ago. I put on new gloves. I put on my tabogan, my heavy warm coat and my scarf. I then placed the bicycle helmet on my healed head, tied a rag around my right ankle bluejeans for protection from the gears and oh yes, I also had on my boots which were last worn 8 weeks ago when I was laying on the road side with the brain injury.

Then it was time. Start the Engine!

Then sitting on the bike, feeling like the first time, I gave the throttle a little thumb pressure and BEGAN TO MOVE!

Around in a circle a few times ... stopped ... Thanked the Lord Jesus Christ for healing me and giving me the opportunity to so enjoy this bicycle and motor again.

I tolded the Puppydog I'll be back and hit the throttle full.

Sure, I had a little nerve ponderings. I took it easy. Not being the WAHOOO speed person I was 8 weeks ago, I carefully headed for the first hill to see if I could engine and peddle to the top.

The legs held. A bit of feeling in the knees shows I lost some of my 'being in shape'. But it was great. Lots of color still in the tree leaves - lots of nice sunshine - and lots of feeling very very good.

It was a short journey, just over 2 miles to a friends house. We had great fellowship and near dusk I rode back.

Very happy to be back on the horse.
This is especially important because due to the brain kerplop, I cannot drive the car for the next 5 months according to the doctor.

BUT I CAN RIDE THE GOLDEN EAGLE BICYCLE MOTORIZED LUXURIOUS LIMOSINE!

Getting Stronger For Autumn Rides

Been taking good walks to get the body back in shape. Most of the vibration that kept the seat a'jiggling is now gone. I tilted the seat back a bit and am now sitting much more ~ instead of the standing on the pedals which I consistantly did to rest my sitter.

Tonight I did a quick 'up the ridge' to view the sunset. Wonderful! 950 miles and I love this Golden Eagle Bike Engine kit.

900+! As recommended by Golden Eagle Bike Engines GEBE I got one of these squeezy things from the Dollar Only Store ... for a dollar. They had the one in the photo which had a longer, narrower tip. Thus, I did not have to attach the piece of tubing to the end in order to get the oil out.

Cost Trivia:
Less the cost of the gas used, the GEBE bicycle kit with new rim has cost me $698 divided by 928 miles = 75.21 Cents per mile. ... and decreasing.
928 miles divided by 30 miles a gallon at $2.80 gallon average, = $86.61 if I had used my car.
928 miles divided by 160 (low end bicycle motor estimate) at $2.80 gallon = $16.24 in gasoline for the bicycle.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goldeneaglebikeengine.blogspot.com/2007/08/900-miles-and-oil-change.html' title='900+! Really am enjoying this Golden Eagle.

Went to another bicycle shop today and the salesman, Kyle, really liked the bike. He kept returning to the window to look out at it. We both agreed that this is the best looking kit on the market and likewise, its simplicity compliments the inventor.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Virtual Bicycle Journey
I am going to start a virtual cross country journey from New York City to San Diego California.
We'll start at Long Beach, New York on the Atlantic Ocean.
We've traveled to Philadelphia. Then to Baltimore. A very pleasant visit to the capital Washington D.C., then towards Harrisburg Virginia, and through the Alleghany Mountains towards West Virginia.
Once arriving in West Virginia we had to do some sneaky nighttime Interstate 64 riding until getting to Hwy 60. (501 to be exact.)  The Subaru Robin 35cc is working perfectly.  Today I ran/rode an errand. I was able to do some shortcuts, which kept me off dangerous parts of the highway, by riding down through the grassy hillside and up others using the motor. Having a motor on a mountain/city bicycle is the best of both worlds.
I got caught in my first rain without shelter Monday. I enjoyed the ride through the National Forest anyway. Got caught in a big rain.  First time in a longgg time I've walked in the rain with Puppydog enjoying it.
Had two great rides the past couple days. The one had a deer, doe, running beside me down a gravel road in the heart of the woods in the depths of the country.
Later I passed a house. I was going downhill so the motor was off. Suddenly I saw it coming ... BIG Dog. He crossed the creek and came up the bank thicket just behind me.  As I peddled profuciously (made up word? that sounds good), I reached back with the left hand flipping the clutch in gear, then reached back with the right hand and gave the engine cord a yank.  Subaru Zoombaru!  "Goodbye Dog!"  ... Thankfully.
Gratitudes to Golden Eagle Bike Engines and a motor kit well designed.
On another route there are two dogs that love to play chase the trek. The first pass caught them off guard.  Yesterday, they heard me coming and got a bit closer.  This one is uphill so leg power is also most useful. A very nice 48 mile ride. It would have been shorter but I missed a turn and ended up much further west.  I poured in my reserve gas. Upon backtracking it began to rain. I saw a nice big tree to get under.  I pulled up and looked over on the porch of the house and there sat someone I knew!
So under the porch the bike and I went. He gave me a big water and we had some nice porch sitting.
It was nearly sunset and I had a ways to go, approx 16 miles.  The rain had stopped so zooming I went. The engine sputtered just as I arrived houseward.
I got to try out my 9 LED front light a little.
Also, my rigged mirror worked just fine. 97 cent rig.
The mirror wedges in the little hole of the hand grip. Much easier to get in and out on bicycle.
Today I figured how to attach it to the car rack. Because of the engine, the bike is weighted less uniform.  I decided to take the front wheel off because it hung just above the exhaust pipe and the heat could damage the tire.
This made the weight quite lopsided. I put the rack under the bicycle back-frame-V'ee instead of the middle cross bar.  I also added an extra nylon rope that loops around the trunk for support and in case a strap were to break.
I'll have to come up with some type of motor cover. Originally I had the motor facing forward but two points made me reverse this and put the motor to the rear:
1. The back tire in front of the exhaust pipe was not good.
2. By reversing, (putting the back tire to the driver's side), the wind and yuk will blow at the protected side of the engine.
When I lock the bike to the car, I loop the cable through the Engine Drive Ring as well as the bicycle frame. The cable is secured to the car frame.
I'll try the 9 LED flashlight that easily bungees to the handlebar at night. Still pondering the best light system.
I got a $1.00 mirror from the car accessories section. Secured a big nail to it and poked it in the hole of my handlebar grips. It wedges. It is small and lightweight. Roads I've never been on.
First, I went to a local bicycle shop to look around. When I came out, I had a FLAT BACK tire.  I looked and found the end of an ink pen stuck in the tire. So in the shop I went and purchased some quick-stick patches.  Soon I was on my way thanking the Lord for letting this flat tire happen at a bicycle shop!
I went across the street and treated myself to a chocolate covered cake donut. They installed it before shipping the engine. They said it cuts a few DB of noise off.  It is very simple but works like a mufller, deflecting sound waves to minimize their exit.
So far I am very happy with the Robin engine.  It is easy to cut off the engine too and you can peddle awhile and simply reach back and give it a half pull to start to rezoom. Very easy.
Part of my decision was that I wanted to just pull up to a station, fill up and be on my way.
GEBE is working on some other type of 'muffler'. And no sore knees!
At 20:22 I pedaled once and suddenly was zooming up the driveway. Then came the very steep hill.  Slight pedal'ing and up I went!
One stop to check bolts and belts visually and away I went up the ridge road. The sun was starting to set. To the top, the very top.
Then down the ridge to the main road. I found a somewhat flat section and registered about 28 mph.  The more the engine ran, it seemed to gain strength.
Various porch sitters, flower tenders, and road walkers watched me go by. I took it down into a field, picked and ate some blackberries, reached behind me and easily started the engine eventhough I was on the seat.
I returned to the humble abode at 21:09 with 9.4 miles covered.
I'll see how my body does. Because the bearing turns loosely when going counter clockwise, I used, everyone duck..., nails from the backside to wedge the gears to the spokes. (Remember, going clockwise locks the gears for pedaling)
Shuddder. Nails holding gears.
Tapping to unlock the spindle nut. Counter Clockwise.
The gears line up with different size slots inside. They can only slip over the spindle one way.
At last I was successful. The gears slip off easily. I then placed them on the new spindle and... uh oh... the new spindle is longer. Therefore there ended up being a near quarter inch play. Hmmm.
Spindle is too long for 7 gears. Its made for 9.
Spacer placed between gear 6 and 7. #7 being lower onto spindle before locking.
Local bike shops were closed so I picked one towards the west coast and he immediately told me the spindle is for Nine (9) gears.  I only have Seven (7). Hmmm2... I called Dennis. Eventhough it was after hours, He answered!  We conferred and my choices were washers of some sort, or add the extra gears.
I tried a couple ways of doing it. Because the last gear is indented to only cap the spindle and not slide freely down it, I tried something a bit odd.  I put a washer between the outer two gears - between 6 and 7.  Things tightened nicely. We'll see how it holds ...
Gears locked down.
USA Steel Spoke Wheel
I switched the tire over and the new wheel was now ready, though modified. I put it loosely on the bike.
Wheel put on loosely.
Motor rack with thin side of axle bracket facing forward.
I had a problem getting the seat-to-motor bracket support to go over the motor mounting bolts. I had to ream them out a little using a phillips screwdriver.
Problem getting bolt through holes on support.
Reaming out the holes.
Only first and second hole could be used ~ after reaming.
I put the SEAT-to-motor support on three times. hmmm. I did as the manual pictured and used the second hole. However, the support was too long for my bike. Therefore, I tried the third hole. It interferred with the AXLE-to-motor support. So back to hole #2 and major support bending.
Bending on the seat (left) end.
I might have to come up with a better support bar. This one needs some more holes on the seat side. I did some aggressive bending to make it fit and keep motor upright center.
My next 'opportunity' was that the kevlar belt was rubbing the back brake mechanism. (see below images)
Problem: belt rubbing brake.
Rubs when motor perfectly above the wheel's center.
My only solution was to tilt the motor backwards from center.
The next adjustment was that my rear brake cable was rubbing the side of the seat-to-motor support bracket. This is because my Trek's brakes pull from center. All I knew to do was bend the support to the left a little.
I hooked the 'kill switch' (turns motor off) on the left handlebar, and the thumb throttle on the right. (Hard to see in photo). The Kill Switch barely fit. It took lots of effort to get the bolt holes to align. Maybe my bar is fatter.
There she, he, or it is!
It was getting dark, started to rain, and I didn't have any motor oil for the Subaru Robin 35cc Engine. So I decided to clean up and BLOOOOG. Oh yes, I did adjust my brakes to the new rear wheel.
SUMMARY:
Overall, this is an excellent bicycle engine kit. Most of my work was swapping rear wheels which is only because of the bigger engine. This is a first in my life of experiences so I took my time, pondering, calling, looking for potential parts. Since my bike had QUICK-release mechanisms, they had to be replaced by a long bolt/bearing pack or this new pre-fitted wheel.
So, a Bicycle Shoppe may be needed for this kit if:
1. You have quick release wheels
2. You get a new rear wheel.
As for installing the kit, ~ great and easy.
All parts are Good quality.
The weak link, for Me and my bike, is the SEAT-to-motor support bracket. It may need a couple extra 'holes-options' on the seat end.  Golden Eagle does warn about bending at the holes so as to not weaken the bracket strength. I'll ponder this more. I may just cut it and drill a new hole. Also, I may have to trim the edge so the brake cable won't rub at all.
I prefer my engine to be centered above the wheel or slightly forward. However, my bicycle design will force a slightly tilted backwards motor. I have not had a brain meeting with GEBE on this yet.
All that's left now is a n t i c i p a t i o n. ...
<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://goldeneaglebikeengine.blogspot.com/2007/06/putting-it-together.html' title='Putting It Together ! I ordered 36 STEEL spokes as directed for engines over 30cc. Golden Eagle installed the proper width bolt and also installed the drive ring. That leaves about 5 or so parts I have to install. There are just as many ups as there are downs. To date, I've never needed assistance on the downs.  However, the ups are felt quite lively in my knees.
THE ENGINE
In the mouth of two witnesses at Golden Eagle Bike Engines, I chose the 35cc Robin/Subaru Mini-4 Stroke EH035 Engine.
Click Here For Engine Info
This is a GASOLINE only engine fuel tank. It also has the power for the hills ~ which we'll be able to discuss soon from experience.
I got the gear that came with it and did NOT order the trail gear. I'll test out the standard in many terrains and properly report.
I also opted for a small metal adapter which is connected to the engine exhaust pipe. This is as close to a SILENCER as they have.  They said they would invoice me for $5.00 since the adapter is not listed on their order form.
REAR WHEEL
My bicycle is a TREK 850 with front shocks. I have had it for 10 years maybe. It has sat there for three years or so with no friendly person to ride it. The roads in my area are 'spot and kill' types. Drivers spot you and go for the kill. So my exercise has become walking the farm fields with the dog.
The wheels on the bike are 32 spoke. Dennis said no no no.  He said the aluminum spokes would not be able to handle the motors over 30cc. The Robin Engine is 35cc. So I accepted Dennis's genius and ordered the 36 STEEL SPOKE bicycle rear rim. It comes complete with the proper width'd BOLT/BEARING already assembled. I was going to order the bolt separate to replace my quick release. But after choosing this RIM, I did not have to order the bolt. Price difference?: $79 versus $24 after shipping.
By the way, it's raining. Friction drives would be slipping if I was riding.  The Golden Eagle BELT drive is not suppose to.  Simple mechanics Sir Watson. Even if it's raining cats and dogs, it shouldn't be affected by splashing through poodles.
The Order
OK, what did I decide on?
Item Name:  35cc Robin/Subaru Mini-4 Stroke KIT, Golden Eagle Bike Engine Kit
Item Options:  SELECT DRIVE RING SIZE:: 36 Spoked
Item Number:  350R/S 35cc
Quantity:  1
Total:  $599.00 USD
Item Name:  Eagle / Velocity 26" Wheels + Shipping Included
Item Options:  Wheel Selection:: Rear
Choose Style:: Silver
Item Number:  E / V 26" Wheels
Quantity:  1
Total:  $79.00 USD
Cart Subtotal:  $678.00 USD
Shipping:       $20.00 USD
Sales Tax:
Cart Total:     $698.00 USD
The Purchase
Monday, June 18, 2007
I DID IT!
Nervous twitches aside, I made the choice to place the complete order on my credit card.
I used the Golden Eagle Bike Engine order page and made my choices. This opened a PayPal cart.  If I logged in to my PayPal account, I would have to empty my account and the balance would be pulled from my credit card or bank.
I decided not to clean out my PayPal account. Since there is no setting to only take partial monies, I chose to avoid the account completely.
Instead, according to a tip on Golden Eagle's order page, I chose the the "If you do not currently have a PayPal account" link.  This way I paid completely from my credit card.
