Belt Problem Opportunity : New Gear

Had a belt slip again. Hmmm. Changed it not long ago. Everything looks OK. I called the professional Julia at Golden Eagle. We discussed and I tweaked. Still slipped. I called again and talked to Dennis. His conclusion was the same as Julia's but with more technical jargon to share.

Julia felt the gear was worn but I had trouble understanding how to observe it.

Sure enough, after ordering a new gear, one size larger, it was obvious that mine was worn when the new one arrived. Pictures soon for details...

Gear : $29
Belt : $29

Therefore, the conclusion of this matter is that with a number 13 gear versus a number 12 the bicycle is zooming along once again.

All the belts I have are still good so I should be covered until at least the year 2155.

I can tell a noticeable difference. Everything is tighter and I pulled one of the largest hills in the area, peddling included, and did not have any problem eventhough I was using the previous belt which had slipped alot on worn gear #12.

I love this invention.

HELLO SAN DIEGO ! 3000 miles!

I hit the 3000 mile mark!
Virtual Pretend Bike Journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific:
Going the northern I-40 route (2,963 miles) I just splashed into the Pacific Ocean!

Going the southern route through Houston to El Paso, Tucson and then on to San Diego, I have 38 miles to go.

ONE more! If I put the Atlantic start point, Long Beach New York, and put the finish point, Sunset Cliffs San Diego California, then the trip is only 2,780 miles. Thus my 3002 trip has me heading north and places me 50+ miles north of Los Angeles!

What a great journey on my Golden Eagle Bike Engine kit. BikeEngines.com

New Rim - August 22, 2008 - It's Great To Ride Again!

I have installed my new bicycle rim with the larger 105mm spokes. This shows everything except centering the Golden Eagle disk which is a simple process of tapping the ring here and there to get it as true centered as possible. I'll show that soon.

AtLast : New Rim is on the Way

Got my notice that UPS is on the way. New rim. Stronger spokes. Better knowledge of what not to do and what to do to avoid another broken rim.

The worse thing about not having my Golden Eagle Bicycle working is ~ that I now have no excuse for myself not to have to work.

THINGS I'M LEARNING

Just had a great talk to GEBE.

1. Very important information on the Tension Lever:
http://www.motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?t=13661

2. Information of Spokes
http://www.motoredbikes.com/showthread.php?t=13647

He broke a spoke
And spoke he's broke
So spare the bloke
The spare he broke
And give the bloke
A brand new spoke.

Uh Oh ... Spokes break

Three spokes appeared to have broken at once today. I noticed other loose ones. The tire rim is 'S' shape bent.

I've started some forum exploring for the next move.

Bicycle shop stayed open after hours for me.
Owner had many good ideas.

Not sure on the best approach. New rim? Different spokes? Spoke anchors?

More soon.

Still had a great ride before having to stop and call a great friend.
My Virtual Pretend Bike Journey from the Atlantic to the Pacific now has me Gila Bend, Arizona, just southwest of Phoenix.

Wonderful.

June 26, 2008 : 88 Mile Record Ride : 1st Anniversary!

Had a most wonderful record ride today. 88 miles. Mountains, farms, streams, lakes, rivers, cows, birds, goats and an ostrich!

A very nice 1st Anniversary ride.

Virtual Pretend Bike Journey:
Success. Just crossed the Texas border in New Mexico on I-10.
If I go via I-40 just made it into Arizona from New Mexico.

ANNIVERSARY !

June 25, 2007 Installed the Kit
June 26, 2007 Had my first ride!
I will give my one year analysis shortly.

Concerning my VPBJ Virtual Pretend Bike Journey, I have discovered if I qwirk back in time and take I-40 versus I-10, I can say that I crossed Oklahoma, Texas, and almost across New Mexico to Arizona.
I-10 has me running up the border of Texas towards El Paso.

Was hoping to make it to San Diego but my 50 day hospital/recovery furlough slowed the plan down.

So today in honor of One Year Anniversary from the First Ride, I shall venture out on my Golden Eagle Bike Engine Kit Bicycle and enjoy!

Current mileage: 2222 miles. (actually 2,223 but 2222 sounds better.)

Tank modification : Almost One Year Anniversary! 2200 Miles!

Working on modifying the gas tank so the air pressure will leave allowing an easier way to fill it up at the station.

Now the rear of the bike needs lifted for the trapped air bubbles to come out. Then the tank can be filled.

I found a package of 6 squirt guns for $1.00 at walmart. The plug used to hold water inside the playgun is what I used for the back of the engine gas tank. It worked.

Great Ride ... Broken Spring ... 2100 Miles

2144 Miles on the Golden Eagle Bike Engine.

Way out in the country the belt quit working. I looked down and it was not broken but was loose.

I stopped and saw the tension lever flapping. It turns out the spring which holds the lever had broken. I took a bungee cord and looped and pulled the lever towards the seat. This worked. Very glad because I was miles from help and no cellphone signal.

Don't know why the spring broke. You can see the connector hole at the bottom of the lever. Also you can see that the top of the spring, the part with the hook, is missing.

Great ride though! In my Virtual Pretend Bike Journey I am now at the west border of Texas!

2000 MILES !

Made it to the Golden Eagle 2000 Mile mark. 2006 to be exact. A beautiful day and a perfect ride.

2000 Miles on the Golden Eagle Bicycle Bike Engine

A few weeks ago I ordered a 2 new belts. My first belt had one spot on it where the grooves were slightly worn causing a knock/slap sound while riding full throttle. I put the new belt on and carry the second just in case.

The worn grooves in only one spot was curious. It possibly came this way: When riding down a steep hill, the engine throttle is not used. Once the ground levels, if you immediately hit the throttle without pedaling, there is a peculiar slap sound as the belt engages. Even a few pedals may not stop the loud slap of the belt. If you pedal until all bicycle motion is controlled by your pedaling, and then slowly start the throttle pressure, the slapping usually will not occur.

I may have damaged the first belt as I learned proper procedures.

Other than that, I have changed the oil and everything works great. I noticed this last trip I may have increased one (1) mile per hour. They said the Subaru Robin engine would get better and better with age and use.

Great Spring. Great bicycle kit. Great riding and a great way to enjoy our Lord's creation.

On my Virtual Pretend Bike Journey I am now just east of Pecos Texas!

March 3 2008 : Spring is Near

We're closing in on Spring. Have just had a few small rides but preparing the bike for the bigger ones. I sure like the 200 miles a gallon of the Robin Engine. The Golden Eagle Bike Engine kit has held up very well over a cold winter. I had to keep the bicycle outside due to the engine smell indoors. However, it always started quickly regardless of the temperatures. Nothing broke with the kit parts - throttle, kill switch, spokes ring, cables or main gear belt. I am very pleased with this system. It has passed all tests wonderfully.

The only crack I had was in the plastic gear/belt shield. This shield can vibrate while riding due to engine, wind, or bumps. One bump cracked it at the connecting bolt section. Nothing major.

What I decided to do is use the soft side of the velcro strips I had. I placed them on the inside and edges of the shield. This silenced nearly all noise and bad vibration hinderances from the shield while riding. I'll add a photograph.

The time change comes March 9 so we'll have more light in the evening.

More soon.

A few miles here, a few miles there,
Here a chill, there a hill,
Everywhere a thrill thrill.
